Your induction into social care

You don't necessarily need any qualifications to get a job in social care. When you start your job, you'll get an induction which includes the Care Certificate or equivalent.

The Care Certificate

The Care Certificate is an agreed set of standards that define the knowledge, skills and behaviours expected of specific job roles in social care. It's made up of the 15 minimum standards that should be covered if you are new to working in social care. They are;

  1. Understand your role
  2. Your personal development
  3. Duty of care
  4. Equality and diversity
  5. Work in a person centred way
  6. Communication
  7. Privacy and dignity
  8. Fluids and nutrition
  9. Awareness of mental health, dementia and learning disabilities
  10. Safeguarding adults
  11. Safeguarding children
  12. Basic life support
  13. Health and safety
  14. Handling information
  15. Infection prevention and control

On the job training

As well as completing the Care Certificate, you will have the opportunity to complete lots of different training. Some training, such as infection control and safeguarding adults, is mandatory for all care and support professionals.

Other training is more specialist and will differ depending on your role and the needs of the people who use your service. Examples of specialist training include dementia and autism awareness.
