Supported living and Shared Lives

Supported living care professionals work with individuals who have chosen to rent or buy their own accommodation, but require support to live independently. Supported living settings come in a variety of forms. Examples include shared homes, privately rented flats and flats within an accommodation block that is specifically designed for adults with social care needs.

The type of support that care professionals provide may include assistance with budget planning, managing bills, shopping for food, preparing meals and cleaning. Supported living workers also help people to access social activities, such as trips to the pub or a leisure centre. Staff in supported living settings are trained to work with people to maximise their independence and support them to be actively involved in their communities.

The Shared Lives scheme is a service that brings together people who require support to live independently and paid carers who open up their family homes. Shared Lives carers support people for short or long-term placements. Carers are self-employed but are supervised and managed by the local authority. You can find out more about becoming a Shared Lives carer by contacting the Leicestershire Shared Lives scheme.
